Pre-Production: New Treatment After Pitch

Pre-Production: Audience Feedback

Pre-Production Audience Feedback

Good Points:
  • Using a real based story as an outline
  • Overall idea is really good
Bad/Improvement Points:
  • Use bullying as the reason for the conspiracy rather then stress
  • Think about length- how everything is going to fit in
  • Make it more different to my murder
  • Need permission to shoot on a bus so re-think that idea

Case Study Three- NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET

Nightmare on Elm Street

Synopsis of the video: A group of teenagers are being stalked by Freddy Krueger, a killer who hunts them down in their dreams. while they are awake they are able to protect eachother however in their sleep they are in a horrible trouble and there is no way out.

Type of video: This video is a non linear narrative video as it has no clear beginning, middle and end which follows through in the horror. through this the audience are able to see how the journey of these teenagers bring them to different types of horror elements such as  violence such as a stabbing etc.

Theme and Motifs: This film uses live action aswell as animation as all tehcharcters are human apart from the actual killer. There is a serious atmosphere as it is a horror/thriller, the film also has a tense atmosphere in order to draw the audience in. violence is another theme as blood is involved which is typical of a thriller film.

Representation of characters: The characters are presented as normal teenagers living with their families. However life for them changes when Freddy Krueger starts to stalk them. Freddy Krueger is shown as a non-human character hence protraying the non-real element of the thriller. The teeenagersare also represented as scared and strong to last with such atragedy until the last scene.

Camera Angles/Special Effects/ Mise En Scene And Editing Techniques: the prop used are a knife for the stabbing and food. the characters are wearing casual clothing. the scene is located inside the cafe. close ups are used for the food, his hand when it has blood on it in order to show the audience clearly and screate a tense atmosphere. also close upsare used on the teenagers himself in order to see the scared facial expression he is protraying. side view is used to sho the direction he is walking in. back view is showed to make teh audience see that he is being stalked by Freddy Krueger but is unaware of this. A wide-shot is also used here to show the location, clothing and posture. their is also tilting using when the girl from the cafe is shown this is possibly to make the audience think who the person is and to convey a tense atmosphere. the sounds and music in tehfilm are used to create and build suspense such as when Freddy Krueger is following the teenager. sound of the squeeky door also create suspense to who is there.

Target Audience: The target audience are upper teenagers as students are used within the film. chidren however will find this sort of film disturbing as blood and other horror elements are used.

Ideas To Use:
  • involvments of knifes and stabbing- conveying violence
  • using students to relate to the audience- teenagers
  • playing with the audiences mind- keep them thinking
  • suspense created the hand with blood bit

Case Study Two- MY MURDER

My Murder

Synopsis of the video: In this short film a girl called Samantha is originally going out with a guy who is in a gang, he doesn't give her much time or attention and that is when she meets Shakhilus (main character). when her boyfriend finds out he gets really angry as he is over protective and that's when they decide to set a honey trap which end in a tragic way.

Type of video: This video is a clear linear narrative video as a voice over is used by Shakilus. Through this the audience get to understand what he had to go through from his point of view and also get an idea of what the film is actually trying to show them. Additionally, Shakhilus facial expressions in the murder scene represent the narrative messages in order for the audience to get a better understand of what is been implied in the short film.

Theme and Motifs: This film is based around live action throughout in order to convey a serious atmosphere. this is clearly seen through the film as violence, conflict relationships and tension are clearly seen in the film as these are also the key themes. these are also expected themes as the genre which is a thriller conveys this.

Representation of characters: typical characters are used in this film as it is a short film and the audience will find it easier to understand such a film. for example a protective boyfriend, lonely girlfriend, supportive film and a gang. these characters also play a key role towards the genre as it is a thriller and such characters are expected. Shakilus is shown as a friendly, decent and a guy who just likes to have fun with out causing any trouble. Samantha is an average girl who is going out with a 'gangster', she rarely gets any attention by him but she still seeks it as much as she can, she just wants someone there for her. Samantha's boyfriend is part of a gang and as he is so into it he doesn't give Samantha any time however hes over protective hence he don't want any boy around his girlfriend.

Camera Angles/Special Effects/ Mise En Scene And Editing Techniques: close ups are used to show facial expressions of the characters- such as at the bus stop close up of Alisha not being able to face Shakilus possibly because of the guilt she has within her, Alisha in the field as she is just still watching Shakilus being hit and then again when Shakilus is stabbed ad is laying on the floor hence showing the pain he is in through his facial expressions. mid shots are used to show what the characters are wearing and their postures. mid-shots are sued in the bus when Samantha and Shakilus are seated at the top of the bus. they are wearing casual clothing. Shakilus looks relaxed however Samantha looks unease and scared. wide-shots are used to show location, clothing and postures. these are used in running scenes such as when the gang is running after Shakilus. the gang are wearing tracksuits. the location is the street and then the field at the back of the flats. mid-shot and wide-shot are used in the field during the stabbing scene between the gangs, Samantha's boyfriend and Shakilus. high camera angle is used when Samantha and Shakilus are leaving the bus and again from the flat view. over the shoulder view is also viewed of the person calling the police in the flat. birds eye view is used at the end of the film this could be to show the overall location and convey it is the end. the only props used are a phone and a knife which associates with the genre as the 21st century is a technology based generation and the theme of youth and their lifestyle. the only sounds used were the sound of wind on the street and voice over at the end of the film when the police arrive. locations used are the bus, bus stop, street and the back garden field.

Target Audience: Teenagers are the key target audience as they are used in the film but also because they are most likely to be able to relate to such a story concerning violence, gangs and the youth lifestyle in today's world. they may no someone who has been in the same position as the main character (Shakilus)

Ideas To Use:
  • using the theme of complex love
  • violence- stabbing
  • main girl character not getting much attention from her boyfriend
  • having a story which people could relate to- a reality of today
  • using a knife as a key prop
  • mobile phones- play a key role in communication

Case Study One- BEN AND JACKIE

Case Study One- Ben And Jackie

Synopsis of the video: The synopsis of this video is based around a typical taxi driver called Ben. Through this short film his thoughts of a typical Monday are expressed. So we see that he does not like his usual Mondays as nothing good happens for him. However, he does have a crush on a particular customer called Jackie who he thinks enlightens his Mondays until, the day when he is going to ask her out which doesn't turn out to good as she introduces her boyfriend to Ben. So he is back to the typical unlucky Mondays.

Type of video: This video is a clear linear narrative video as a voice over is used in order to express Ben's views. Through this the audience get to understand what is going on in Ben's head and also get an idea of what the film is actually trying to show them. Additionally, Ben's facial expressions represent the narrative messages in order for the audience to get a better understand of what is been implied in the short film.

Theme and Motifs: This video is based around live action throughout. This is clearly seen as in whole video Ben's work is given clear importance, there are no monologues or on stage based themes. It is all live to portray his typical Mondays. Another clear theme is the idea of complex love as he is so aware of the fact that he truly likes Jackie but never tries to approach her in such a way and then when he finally wants too he finds out she already has a boyfriend.

Representation of characters: Every character in this short film is shown as a typical character. The main character itself (Ben) is portrayed as a archetypal taxi driver who gets annoyed by his customers whether its through arguments, noise, fighting or even being filthy and dirtying his care. Jackie is also a typical female role character as she is is beautiful, friendly towards Ben and makes his day delightful. Other characters in the short film are also represented as typical as the customers on a Monday will always be all over the place if they are teenagers even and argumentative customers. Jackie's boyfriend could in some way portray a typical boyfriend who is genuine and relaxed therefore does not say much. Typical characters are used to help the audience understand the short film better as it has a certain amount of time to gt the points across and if typical characters are not used the audience may not understand the short film.

Camera Angles/Special Effects/ Mise En Scene And Editing Techniques: There are various techniques used in this short film that give it a lot of meaning in targeting the audience. There are close ups and master shots used in the short film. Close ups are used on the flowers to show there relevance in the scene and close ups are used on the characters to show facial expressions this is clearly used on Ben to show his mood and used on Jackie when she is sitting in the car. With Ben it shows how miserable his Mondays are like at the start of the short film where he doesn't seem to happy, however with Jackie she seems very happy and joyful in appearance. Master shots are used from the windscreen to give the audience a better picture of what is happening in the scene. This shot is quite important when Jackie's boyfriend is first introduced as the expressions on Ben's face are not on a positive side, Jackie is proudly and happily introducing her boyfriend and her boyfriend seems quite genuine and pleased to meet Ben. Master shots themselves are used to give an overall picture of the scene including gestures, body language. The mise en scene is realism as natural lighting is used to reflect that it is a normal, casual day therefore no stage scenes. Realism is also portrayed through costumes which are normal everyday clothing and the car is of a normal typical taxi driver car nothing special. The main important prop used is the flowers as it has relevance in Ben's crush for Jackie. The sound used is mainly diegetic however when voice overs were used to express Ben's views/emotions it is non-diegetic sound. The cutting rate of the film itself is slow this could be to create the effect of a slow, boring Monday as it would be in Ben's opinion.

Target Audience: The target audience for this short film is everyone. This is because a lot of age groups are approached in this video as it is kept genuine, which clearly shows through lexis of the dialogues and voice over which is low to mid and even action itself is not too much for younger age audience and not too less for older based audience. however a direct age group if appropriate would be teenagers and people is their 20's as children or elderly may not feel so interested in a love based story or something that does not specifically include them as no children or elderly people were in the short film so they may feel alienated in this way.

Ideas To Use: The idea I will consider to use is the theme of complex love so a boy liking a girl who already has a boyfriend but he is unaware of this. Also basing the video on live action and using voice overs to express characters views is a good idea which i will also consider as it gives the short film meaning to its messages in depth. For camera angles using close ups will also be used in order to show facial expressions of the characters and extreme close ups for relevant objects..
